Reading at the Library Gamma Chi members participate in BABYREADS story time for pre-schoolers at two of the county’s public libraries. For thirty minutes each week at each library, we involve small children along with their moms, dads, grannies, or even nannies in interactive literacy. Our programs include reading books, telling stories, singing nursery rhymes, using puppets and props, leading rhythmic movement, and also encouraging use of the library. Members from Gamma Chi volunteer to read at the Monroe-Walton Library, W.H. Stanton Memorial Library, and O’Kelly Memorial Library in Loganville. |
5th Grade Writing Contest Our chapter hosts an annual essay contest for 5th graders in the county’s public schools.. After approval was obtained from the superintendent’s office, a letter was sent to the 5th grade teachers, inviting participation and explaining the purposes, rules, and regulations. Teachers were also sent a student writing form with the writing topic, the writing situation, and directions for writing. Essays were collected and judged by a committee of our members, using a rubric. Certificates and monetary prizes were awarded to the winner at each school during that school’s awards ceremony. An additional prize was given to the over-all county winner and his teacher. This project was well received by the school system. |
Cups of Cheer for the Upcoming Year Members prepare cups with school supplies, candy, and bookmarks for new teachers to Walton County. The cups are distributed during new teacher orientation. |
